"Henry Muoria: Journalism, Exile, and Kenyan Culture"
Wednesday, November 17
Henry Muoria was a friend of Kenyaís first president, Jomo Kenyatta, the editor of Kenya's first newspaper in Kikuyu, Mumenyereri, and the author of many essays and articles. The newspaper was shut down by the colonial regime in 1952, as part of attempts to suppress the Mau Mau rebellion. Muoria was forced into exile and spent the remainder of his life in England. Bodil Folke Frederiksenís presentation draws on her research on Muoria's life in the context of recent African history. Her work is part of a collaborative research project on the social history of writing and reading in Africa, and she is also editing an anthology of Muoria's texts in English and English translation.
