"Kristin Lavransdatter"; Liv Ullmann (1995)

This historical drama is based on the first of a series of novels by Sigrid Undset, set in fourteenth-century Norway. Undset was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1928, largely on the basis of these three novels.

This film, however, limits itself to the plot of the first novel, Kransen (The Bridal Wreath), which changes the scope of the narrative from its literary version: instead of a lengthy meditation on piety, penitence and pride, we get a much more generic tale of star-crossed lovers.

What the two narratives have in common, though, is a pervasive sense of flawed humanity.

Beautifully photographed by Sven Nykvist in a number of stunning settings, including a reproduction of a medieval farm (which still can be visited by tourists) built in Gudbrandsdal exclusively for this film.
