Education: Staatliche Zwischenprüfung German and American Studies, Johannes-Gutenberg-Universität, Mainz,Germany; MA in German, University of Cincinnati
Current Research: Before arriving at UT in 2003, Judith Hammer studied American Studies, German Studies and Journalism at the Universität Mainz, the University of Cincinnati, Ohio and as a Erasmus/Sokrates fellow at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense. She has held workshops at conferences on teaching cultural and visual analysis and critical thinking in the foreign language classroom and has presented papers at conferences on late 19th century as well as on current German literature and culture. In her dissertation ''Culture via Television: Investigating the Effects of a German TV Series on the Perceptions of Fourth-Semester German Language Classes,'' Judith explores whether particular materials and tasks, applied in conjunction with student viewing of a German language television series, help students to perceive cultural and related linguistic implications that might otherwise be overlooked or viewed only in terms of stereotypes. In addition to teaching 1st and 2nd year German language classes, Judith also coordinated the third and fourth semesters of German language study in the department and supervised the department's Outreach program in German for the Austin Public Schools. Furthermore, she taught the lecture class ''The Movies Go To War'' which complements her interest in film history in general and in war movies in particular. For the academic year 2007/2008 she received the Continuing University Fellowship. In her spare time, Judith enjoys playing the piano, the violin, traveling, skiing and playing volleyball.
