In the gritty and surreal port city of Brest, Querelle begins to frequent a brothel run by Lysiane, his brother's lover. There he meets Nono, and in the power games that follow, Querelle confronts desires that push the boundaries of social interaction, and challenge the meanings of "normal" sexuality. | |

September 16, 2008 The Marriage of Maria Braun (Rainer Werner Fassbinder, 1979) At the end of WWII, Maria discovers that her husband, a German soldier, has been killed on the front. She takes a job in a bar where she falls in love and gets involved in a relationship with an African-American GI. When her husband Hermann returns unexpectedly, confusion ensues in what becomes a complex filmic exploration of the shifting meanings of relationships, and the intersections of sex, gender and power in post-war German society. | |
September 2, 2008 The Legend of Paul and Paula (Heiner Carow, 1973) Director Heiner Carow adapted Ulrich Plenzdorf's tragicomic love story to make what has become one of the best-known East German films. After leaving her husband, Paula, a now single mother, falls in love with Paul, a committed bureaucrat and married career man altogether dissatisfied with his stagnant life. He and Paula get involved in a passionate affair, but Paul turns out to be much too uptight and conservative for Paula who soon gets fed up with him. When a tragedy makes him aware of what Paula means to him, he gives all he's got to win her back. | |

June 24, 2007 From Jan Fau: Come join us for the 90th annual reunion of the Texas Swedish Pioneers Association at Palm Valley Lutheran Church in Round Rock. The celebration will begin at 2:30 with an organ concert by Dr. Elsworth Peterson, and the meeting starts at 3:00. The Texas Swedish Interest Class from Elgin will sing a number of selections in Swedish and lead the prayer Fader Vår. The traditional annual meeting has been held continuously since 1917, the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the first large group of 100 Swedes who came to Texas in 1867 from Småland. After the program, there will be refreshments, visitation, and exchange of memories in the church hall. The association has no formal membership; anyone interested in Swedish heritage is invited and urged to attend. |
