The first time they sleep together, Jan panics and pulls back in what Nina interprets as rejection. She later finds out that Jan reacted so harshly because he is HIV-positive. November 18, 2008 Lola and Billy the Kid (E. Kutlug Ataman, 1999) Murat, a young Turk living in Berlin, realizes he's gay, which is problematic given his conservative family background and his homophobic brother Osman, the head of the house. In a bar, Murat meets Lola and his partner Billy, also from a conservative Turkish-German background that dictates the boundaries of their relationship. Lola would like to be more open, to walk the streets with Billy as an out gay couple, but Billy insists that Lola eventually get a sex-change so they can be married. Lola refuses and leaves Billy, returning in desperation to the family that had rejected him. The surprising and tragic ending highlights the tensions between personal liberation on the one hand and the importance of family and tradition on the other.

November 11, 2008 I am My Own Woman (Rosa von Praunheim, 1992) One of Von Praunheim's best known films, I am My Own Woman is a fascinating look at the life of famed Berlin transvestite Charlotte von Mahlsdorf. The film, moving freely between documentary sequences and nostalgic reminiscence, is a queer look at nearly a century of German history through the figure of Von Mahlsdorf: from Weimar, through the Third Reich, the Cold War and up into unified Germany. In this, Von Praunheim offers an exploration of the places where personal sexual histories and official narratives collide.

October 10, 2008 The year 1968 has become a central myth for the twentieth century, the purported moment of origin for "the present" -- for current politics, culture, and academics. This conference commemorates the 40th anniversary of 1968 by calling for a reassessment of its local and global impacts, its icons, myths, and images, the traces and absences left in its wake, and the intellectual and cultural heritages that we are still working through, as the collective memory of participants fades into a post-memory of the still incomplete projects of modernization, globalization, and liberation. The conference aims to create interdisciplinary discussions of the many different 1968 experiences and projects that can be recovered in global, national, and international frameworks. Flashpoints, major players, artistic responses in all media and genres, and (re)theorizings of 1968 and its heritage will be included as conference themes.

April 10, 2008 Professor Maurizio Cotta Current discussions within European media outlets stage "Europe" in contradictory terms of both existential crisis and of emancipatory hope. On the one hand, there is an ideological crisis in transatlantic political relations with the USA (and in relation to the Near East) especially since the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq; a political crisis of legitimacy affecting the European Union (EU) especially since the failure to agree a new constitution; and a perceived cultural crisis of identity generated by discussions concerning migration and multiculturalism, often time referred to in apocalyptic tones as a supposed "clash of civilizations". Making Europe/Making Europeans focuses on Europe and European citizenship as a performance and as a process in the making. We want to present the diverse European realities from a "grassroots" level, based on empirical studies and reflections on the level of face-to-face contacts and everyday activities. In other words to think critically about "the ethnographic" as a mode of enquiry and the "everyday" as an important site of understanding and theory generation. Our overall questions are:

September 13, 2007 Dr. Michael Verhoeven Can we silence the ghosts of history? The Wehrmacht-Exhibition, which was shown in eleven major cities in Germany between 1999 and 2004 and was visited by more than 500,000 people, challenged ordinary Germans to rethink what their fathers and grandfathers did during the war. Whereas most had been led to believe that the cold-blooded murder of civilians had been a crime of a minority of officers, for the first time Germans saw photos and footage of ordinary soldiers executing civilians and POWs. The nation was shaken, and large protests were organized by those who believed the evidence was manufactured. In "The Unknown Soldier," director Michael Verhoeven interviews historians and experts, including those who allege or deny the crimes, and filmed in the killing fields of Ukraine and White Russia.
September 12, 2007 The first in a trio of films (by Verhoeven and two other filmmakers) dedicated to the memory of the Munich student resistance group of the same name. He shows the underground production and the distribution of flyers which finally leads to the arrest of the Scholl siblings.
