Current Research: Berna Güneli is currently a second year Ph.D. student in the Department of Germanic Studies. She also studied and did research at La Universidad de La Coruña, La Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, and La Universidad de León in Spain. Her scholarly interests include European turn of the century literature, Weimar Modernism, late 20th century German film and literature and Germany's immigration history. Her research explores the connection between recent German film, gender and representations of minorities. She has presented on Fatih Akin's Gegen die Wand (language use in Gegen die Wand and its implications for identity formation; gender roles in Gegen die Wand), on the myth and iconography of the 'New Women' and the creation of a (New) Daughter in Weimar Germany, and also on comparative Journalism (immediate journalistic responses from Germany, Spain and the U.S.A. to 9/11 and the Madrid bombings). Berna has taught 1st and 2nd year German in the U.S.A. and intermediate to upper level German at the Christian-Albrechts-Univerität zu Kiel, Germany.
