Frank Donahue, Professor Emeritus of German, passed away at age 63 on Tuesday, November 23rd.
Frank Donahue, Professor Emeritus of German, passed away peacefully at age 63 on Tuesday, November 23rd, of heart failure, while waiting for a heart and kidney transplant. He was born in New York City on June 27th, 1947, and grew up in Yonkers, NY. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Donahue Sr., of Lehigh Acres, FL. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Genevieve, son Frank and daughter Erin, all of Round Rock, his mother, Ann Donahue, of Lehigh Acres, FL, one brother, and three sisters with families.
Frank graduated from St. Albert's Seminary in Middletown, NY, received his BA in German from Iona College in New Rochelle, NY, his Masters in German from Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN and his PhD from Penn State in State College, PA. He was a beloved German professor at The University of Texas at Austin for 32 years from 1976 until his early retirement in 2008. He was director of the German language program in this department for over two decades, and he was the architect of our successful graduate specialization in foreign language pedagogy and second language acquisition. He trained generations of graduate students who are active and successful in the profession. We will miss him.
