GOV 365L • 3 - International Relations of East and Southeast Asia

Course Description

Course number may be repeated for credit when topics vary. Upper-division standing required. No prior knowledge of the region is required. This upper division undergraduate lecture course is designed to introduce students to the post-Cold War international relations of East and Southeast Asia. Particular attention will be devoted to issues that are of concern to Asians themselves, namely: human rights issues; ongoing threats (including terrorism and the N. Korean nuclear weapons program) to military security in the region; and the quest for economic prosperity. The above topics will be addressed with reference to the following themes: 1. the impact of "Asian values" on the international relations of the region 2. the definition of "security" in the post Cold War era 3. the juxtaposition of domestic and international politics in Asia 4. the opportunities and constraints confronting regional institution-building and integration

Grading Policy

1. Brief writing assignment (max. 8 pages): 30% 2. Midterm examination: 25% 3. Final examination: 40% 4. Attendance: 5%
