Contains a substantial writing component. Upper-division standing required. The purpose of this course is to provide a critical analysis of political participation in the context of the African American experience. Through the examination of the various aspects of political participation theory, the historical political participation of African Americans, and the contemporary research on African American political participation, this course intends to establish an understanding of the individual and institutional factors that have and continue to shape the political participation of African Americans. In order to accomplish the goals of the class, the class will be reading and writing intensive.
