Course Description

A study of Rousseau's major works articulating his political theory. The course will aim to understand Rousseaus comprehensive critique, and then radicalization, of the Enlightenment or of liberal and rationalist modernity (and post-modernity). Major themes or foci will be Rousseaus new conceptions of human nature (and its relation to history), of virtue (and its distinction from goodness), of freedom, of republicanism, of the philosophic lifeand of the proper relation of the philosopher to the rest of society.

Some reading knowledge of French would be very helpful.
