GOV 310L • American Government

Course Description

Fulfills first half of legislative requirement for 6 hours of American government. This course is an introduction to United States government. It will introduce the students to a framework for understanding the rules, institutions, policies, and groups that shape American government and politiics. Althought the primary focus of the course is on the national government, we will also spend a significant amount of time discussion Texas government. The course will emphasize the practical side effects of democracy on the American political system, and the impact which individual can have on the political landscape. It is intended to assist students to better navigate the American political system, as well as encourage them to more frequently and effectively participate in politics.

Grading Policy

The grade will be based on three in-class exams and an essay assignment, each worth 25% of the final grade.

Texts

The textbook for the course is "The New American Democracy", by Fiorina and Peterson, Alternate 3rd Edition. There will also be a packet of additional readings.
