Course Description

Course number may be repeated for credit when topics vary. Contains a substantial writing component and fulfills part of the basic education requirement in writing. This is a writing component course whose varying topics are broadly focused on the relationship between elected officials and citizen-voters. The topic in 2004 is a comparison of the Bush and Clinton presidencies. The purpose of the course is to sharpen your thinking, speaking and writing skills. The method is to put everyone to work on the development of an ongoing book project on the presidency. For this reason, previous coursework on the presidency, such as GOV 330K or GOV 312L (The Citizen’s Presidency), is strongly recommended. The main questions we will pursue this semester involve the Bush and Clinton administrations. What, for example, were the leadership styles, political strategies, and core policy commitments of the two men? How responsive were they to the will of the people? The needs of the nation? How effectively did each use presidential power to implement his agenda? How do the policy and political strategies of these two differ from the strategies of other recent presidents?
