Course Description
What role should the United States play in the world today? How should decisions about that role be made? What factors have been decisive in shaping the foreign policies of America's leaders in the past? Can past American behavior provide a basis for generalizations about the determinants of foreign policy today? The seminar will focus on these and other questions. We will read critically a number of important works, some theoretically oriented, others policy-relevant. Readings will be analyzed and evaluated in terms of not only their theoretical or policy significance, but also their heuristic value as examples of how to think about American foreign poluc and the issues and forces that animate it.
