Course Description

Course number may be repeated for credit when topics vary. Upper-division standing required.

Disputes over territory are often violent and intractable. Why do states and ethnic groups fight over territory? In this course students study the following: the economic, emotional, and political value of territory; the political organization of empires versus modern states; boundaries; the geography of ethnic conflict; and interstate territorial disputes. Readings include literature from political science, history, and sociology. Writing assignments encourage students both to think theoretically and to research particular cases. Students are expected to participate actively and are required to present their chosen research paper topic to the class.

Grading Policy

2 short papers 20% each 1 research paper 50% Participation 10%
