Government Professor Elected to Life Membership in the Council on Foreign Relations

Zoltan Barany, the Frank C. Erwin, Jr. Centennial Professor of Government, was recently elected to a Life Membership in the Council on Foreign Relations.

Founded in 1921, the Council on Foreign Relations is the premier foreign policy organization in the United States. The Council's elected Life Members are leaders in government, business, finance, media, and academia. Membership represents the recognition of exceptional achievement in a career involving international affairs. The Council convenes meetings, conducts a wide-ranging studies program, publishes Foreign Affairs - the pre-eminent journal of international affairs and U.S. foreign policy, and sponsors independent task forces whose reports help set the public foreign affairs agenda.

Barany is only the fourth member of the UT faculty currently accorded this honor. He writes broadly on issues of military politics and society and has published books on the armed forces of Russia and East and Central Europe, on the expansion of NATO, on the plight of gypsies in Eastern Europe, and the problems of transition to democracy of the post-communist states.
