Education: Professor Schmitt received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania.

Research interests:
Professor Schmitt has been a member of the University of Texas faculty since 1958. Among his diverse administrative appointments, Professor Schmitt has been the chair of the Department of Government and also served as the associate director and graduate adviser for the Institute of Latin American Studies. He has written numerous publications and has lectured extensively in U.S.-Latin American Relations, U.S.- Mexican Relations, and Church-State Relations in Mexico.
