  • Research Interests: My dissertation examines the relationship between liberal-democracy and religion through an analysis of Locke, Spinoza, and Tocqueville. After first indicating the character of the religious reforms that the thinkers of the Enlightenment sought to bring about, I examine Tocqueville’s critique of them in light of his warnings about the potential future of democracy. My broader research interests include early modern liberal political thought and its critics, the relationship between liberalism and religion, the problem of political theology, and the intersections between political theory and international relations.
