Government Professor Gives Mixed Reviews of Elections in Authoritarian Regimes

Drawing on extensive fieldwork in four countries--Egypt, Iran, the Philippines, and Malaysia--Brownlee identifies the conditions that determine whether elections undermine or fortify authoritarian systems. Authoritarianism in an Age of Democratization
has just been released by Cambridge University Press. Brownlee, who will be on research leave in the Fall, teaches courses on democratization, regime change, authoritarianism, and the politics of the Middle East.
