Incoming Graduate Students Attend Intensive Workshop on Math for Political Scientists
Posted: September 4, 2007
The Workshop, which is similar to programs held at a number of leading political science departments, is designed to give the entering class of doctoral candidates an intensive introduction, or review as the case may be, of basic math and statistics. As scholarship in the discipline has made increasing use of highly complex quantitative data analysis, graduate education has needed to upgrade the skills of students both to read and comprehend a large swath of the discipline's output but also to enable them to do cutting edge research of this sort. A voluntary program, the workshop attracted nearly all of the entering students who started school a week early and attended daily sessions morning and afternoon. The Workshop was taught by Mary Slosar, an advanced doctoral student in the program.
