Course Description

This is a course on postwar Japan. It will focus on the American occupation of Japan, the nature of Japan's postwar political system, the Japanese economic system of state-guided capitalism and the collapse of the "bubble economy" in the 1990s, Japanese technology and Toyota Motor Corporation's system of lean production, Japan's postwar education system, social problems in contemporary Japanese society, Japan's new popular culture, and Japan's strategic/military role in East Asia in the 21th century. Special attention will also be paid to the following aspects of contemporary Japanese life: the Japanese corporation and the life of the salaryman, Japan's "intellectual closed shop," the popularity of new religions, and the changing attitudes toward sex and marriage.
