Course Description

What is the West? Is it a "frontier?" What states, environments, or people does it include? This class will examine the history of the 20th Century American West with a special focus on the environment, people, and region. We will follow a chronological narrative as we learn more about the diverse people, events, images, and forces that have shaped life and culture in the trans-Mississippi West. The course will cover migration and immigration of various peoples in the modern West, the development of state and federal power, the representation of the West in film and literature, the unique environment[s] of the region, the place of the Old West in the modern global economy, and the politics of race, ethnicity, and gender in a region that one historian described as a national and international cross-roads.
