Course Description
This class will examine many of the ways in which medieval people understood their world, their faith, themselves, and their fellow men. Readings will range from the early Middle Ages (Gregory of Tours and Bede) to the 14th and 15th centuries (Margery Kempe and the Pastons). Other authors will include Jocelin of Brakelond (monastic life), Galbert of Bruges (urban life and strife), Robert of Clari (a soldier's life), Matthew Paris (political and Church affairs), and two friars who were missionaries to the Mongols.
Grading Policy
Grades will be based on class participation (20%), a 20 page 1st draft (20%) and a 20 page final draft of your seminar paper (50%), and a 10+ page set of evaluations of the papers of the other students in the class (10%).
