Course Description
Organized violence has been one of the most constant features of human society since earliest times; military history, therefore, is an integral part of the totality of human experience. This broad survey course will provide an introduction to military history from ancient times until the turn of the 17th century. Among other things, it will investigate the interrelationship between warfare and society through specific case studies of carefully-selected military systems. While many of these studies are derived from the Western world, others are drawn from non-Western civilizations. Special attention also will be paid to the evolution of military technology and the art of military command.
Grading Policy
Grades will be based on three short-answer quizzes (worth 10% each), a mid-term exam (30%), and a final exam (40%). The only valid reasons for missing a quiz or exam are medical ones, and you must have a written medical excuse.
