Course Description

This course examines the economic structures and institutions, along with political policies, that shaped the U.S. economy (with primary focus on the 20th century). Students will examine major intellectual traditions associated with entrepreneurship, labor, and government regulation. Specific topics may include the legacy of the New Deal; the role of corporations in public life; social policies and their impact on the distribution of income and power for different groups of Americans: labor, women, African Americans (among others); and the maturation of a mass consumer society.

Grading Policy

Class participation is extremely important and will count for roughly 25% of a student‚s grade. Students will write 4 short essays of 3-4 pages in length at the start of the course; each essay will count for 10% of a student‚s grade. (Taken together, the four essays count for 40% of a student‚s grade.) Students will write a longer essay (roughly 10 pages in length) for the last part of the course, which will count for 35% of a student‚s grade.
