Course Description
This course is a survey of Japanese history from 1800 to the end of the occupation period. Topics to be examined include the transformation of a "centralized feudal" state to a modern beauracratic state, industrialization and its social and cultural consequences, imperialism in Asia, the failure of democracy and the rise of militarism, the road to World War II, defeat and occupation, and the reemergence of Japan as an economic power.
