Course Description
This class covers the history of medieval England from 1066 to 1485. It is intended to provide students with an introduction to the political, social, religious, economic and constitutional history of England during this period. Topics that will receive special attention include: The impact of the Norman Conquest; The reforms of Henry I and Henry II; The Becket Controversy; Magna Carta and the Barons' Revolt; The origins of Parliament; The rise of urban England and the wool trade; The 100 Years' War; The Black Death; Religion and society in the post-plague world; the Wars of the Roses.
Grading Policy
Work for the course will include a map test (10% of grade), 2 in-class tests (25% of grade each), and a take-home final (40% of grade).
Texts
Readings will include a wide variety of primary sources, including medieval chronicles, letters, legal documents, treatises, and religious writings.
