Course Description

Traces more than three centuries of the history of slavery in Brazil (which imported more African slaves than any other nation in the Americas) and the efforts by Afro-Brazilians to gain full citizenship and political empowerment in the twentieth-century Explores the efforts of slaves to resist the degradation of enslavement; to adapt to socioeconomic conditions in Brazil; to reproduce African cultural/ religious forms; and to struggle for social justice in the post- Emancipation era in a nation that has denied the existence institutionalized racism.
