Course Description
Using the Mexican-American experience as a platform, this course will be introduction to the policies, politics and cultures in which Latinas and Latinos make their lives in the United States.
This course will focus on one central question: how and why did Latinos change their understanding of themselves and their positions in American society? As we examine this question together, we will spend time on three sub-themes: 1) connections between gender, family and community; 2) connections between race, labor and region; and 3) the meaning of place, migration and community. Through a variety of classroom and research exercises, students will come to a historical understanding of how Latinos and others position themselves and are positioned within national communities, local communities and racial communities.
