Course Description

This graduate reading seminar presents ten books from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries that have shaped the field of medieval history as it is practiced today. More recent material will be included according to student interest. The emphasis of the course is methodological.


Range from Peter Brown's Augustine through Marc Blochs Feudal Society and Herbert Grundmanns Religious Movements to Jacob Burckhardts Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy.
