This lecture and discussion course focuses on the processes of social, political and cultural modernization in Spain, from the Napoleonic invasion of 1808 through the transition to democracy after the death of General Francisco Franco in 1975. Topics will include the liberal revolution of the 19th century, military intervention in politics, the political and cultural role of the Catholic church, the loss of the American empire, the breakdown of parliamentary government after 1898, the Second Republic, the Spanish Civil War, and the Franquist dictatorship. Music, films, and slides will accompany some lectures.
