Course Description

Emphasis will be placed on the major historiographical questions which focus on the conquest and consolidation of Spain's empire in America, and the theoretical frameworks historians use to examine this process. Topics for discussion include the impact of Spanish invasion and conquest on the indigenous societies of America, indigenous responses to Spanish colonialism, the development of the colonial economies and their integration into the world economy, the growth of the state, race, class, and gender in colonial societies, construction of colonial identities, Church-state relations, and conflicts in colonial society.
