Course Description

This course examines the colonial history of Brazil. Topics to be explored include: Portuguese voyages of exploration in the Atlantic, relations between indigenous peoples, Catholic missionaries, and Portuguese colonists, the rise of the sugar plantation complex, and the African slave trade, gender roles, the eighteenth century gold boom, and Brazil's unique path to Independence.
