Course Description
This class will examine the history of Modern Latin America from the wars of independence at the beginning of the nineteenth century through to the present. We will focus on three distinct geographic regions: Mexico, Brazil, and the Southern Cone (Argentina and Chile). The class will think about Latin America in an international context. What influence has the region had on broader world affairs? How have other countries - especially Britain and the United States shaped the history of Latin America? Alongside this central focus we will look at various important themes, including nationalism and nation building, populism, environmental change, gender, religion, social movements, communism, military dictatorships, and democracy.
