Course Description
This course will explore the arc of the religious history in Latin America, with special emphasis on the role that religion, especially Catholicism, has played in Latin American society and culture. The course takes a chronological approach, starting with the colonial period, but we will place special emphasis on the Church's role during the second half of the twentieth century, as we examine how Church teachings (Liberation Theology in particular) clashed with or complemented the politics of revolution in the region. This class will include field trips, guest speakers, and on-site observations.
Grading Policy
The grade for this class will be based on a series of short essays and successful completion a research project (not a paper).
