HIS 365G • History of the Hip-Hop Generation
This course uses the music, culture, and politics of the Hip Hop Generation as a lens to look at issues affecting post-civil rights Black America. Despite the gains made during the 1960s, the post-civil rights era has been characterized by: deindustrialization, urban decay, poverty, unemployment, anti-intellectualism, imprisonment, police brutality, black-on-black crime, incarceration, single parenthood, illegal drugs, and a plethora of other social problems. This class will pay close attention to the politics, activism, an ideology of this generation, as they grapple with the future of Black America.
Each student is responsible for three exams, and a group project. Each exam is worth 25% of the overall grade, class assignments 15%, and class participation will count for 10%. Exam dates will be announced, In addition graduate students are required to write a 15-20 page paper on any aspect of the Hip-Hop Generation. However, you must first get your topic approved by Dr. Moore.
Students can expect to read approximately five books and numerous articles from magazines, newspapers, and journals.
