Course Description
Japan since its second modern revolution, the U.S. occupation of 1945-52. Topics include the heritage of the 1930s and of the total war of 194145, Japan's democratic transformation, economic recovery, political division, and high-speed growth, considered as a political-economic, social, and personal process. The course concludes by exploring Japans rise as an economic and increasingly, a cultural superpower since the 1980s, the great recession of the 1990s, and Japans present place in Asia and the world.
