Course Description
Hatshepsut, Nzinga, Nehanda, Sara Bartmann, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, Nisa, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Buchi Emecheta, Mpho M'Atsepo Nthunya&. Recognize any of these names? Some, none at all? Well, do not worry, you will be an "expert" by the end of this course designed to introduce students to the historical and contemporary lives of women on the African continent. The course will cover both the breath and depth of African women's history. Breath will be considered through lectures, while depth will be studied through the readings of particular case studies of African womens writings, on major themes like: politics, economics, religion, the family, culture, technology, feminism, colonialism, nationalism, and development - the readings will include memoirs and novels, talk about serious learning while having fun. Grading Policy
Attendance and Participation (15%); In-class Quizzes (20%); One Reflection and Analytical Essay, 15%; Mid-term exam (25%); Final exam (25%)
