Course Description
This course explores the principal beliefs and practices of Jews, Christians and Muslims and the development of the religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The course will progress thematically. Themes will include: Text, History and Authority; Ritual and Behavior; and Belief. Incorporated into these themes are considerations of religious art, of arguments about the nature of divinity and humanity, and ethics. The course will also provide an introduction to the field of religious studies by exposing students to some of the interdisciplinary methodologies used to understand religion as a central component of human culture. Readings for the course will focus on primary sources, both excerpts from the sacred texts of the three traditions, but also texts that illustrate the interactions between the traditions and the ways in which believers responded to particular social conditions.
