Course Description
In this course we will investigate the main political, social and cultural developments in Europe during the twentieth century. We will address the causes and consequences of World War I and the unique cultural and national ferment of the interwar period, and then turn to World War II and the Cold War. Although we will cover the key events and historical figures involved, we will also focus on the everyday lives of ordinary women and men during the period. We will conclude with discussions of European disintegrative and integrative forces after the fall of communism in 1989, as the eruption of civil war in Yugoslavia and the expansion of the European Union encapsulate the divergent challenges Europe will face in the twenty-first century.
