Course Description
Emphasis will be placed on the major historiographical questions which focus on the development of Spain's empire in America, and the theoretical frameworks historians use to examine this process. Topics for discussion include the impact of Spanish invasion and conquest on the indigenous societies of America, (including its environmental impact); indigenous responses to Spanish colonialism, Spanish expansion and the Iberian context of conquest and expansion, the formation of the colonial economies and their integration into the world economy, the development of the Spanish state and the limits of its power, the roles of religion and law, race, class, and gender in colonial societies, construction of colonial identities, Church-state relationships and conflict in Spanish American societies.
