Course Description

Despite the expansion of African American history since the 1960s, ironically, that area of intellectual inquiry that impacts, both directly and indirectly, on the social, cultural and political experiences of African Americans, that of the political economy of Black America, has been generally ignored. The purpose of this course, then, is to consider contemporary intellectual assessments of factors that distinguish, consider, or exclude the Black Political Economy in analysis of the Black American Experience. Through assigned readings, information, analysis and methodology from those studies will be used to provide the basis in the development of a conceptual framework to be used in the writing of a student-selected topic research paper. Regardless of the student's specific area of specialization or field of study, the question is that, by considering insights from an analysis of the Black Political Economy, how can this knowledge impact on an area of study, which generally has limited assessments of this topic only to the social and political life of black Americans.

BOOK REVIEW ANALYSIS -- Of the required books, students will write a three -page paper on five (5) of the books which will include: a summary of the book and insights gained that could provide useful in student's research paper topic or why that book proves useless in research paper analysis. 25% of grade RESEARCH PAPER -- topic should emanate from any field of study in which student includes assessments of the Black Political Economy as a basis for analysis of that topic. For example, a student in another geographical area of study can develop a topic that: 1) compares and contrasts assessments of the Black Political Economy with that of another racial, ethnic or national group; 2., a student in the social science or the humanities can expand on a topic, illuminating how inclusions of a black political economy perspective has broadened assessments of that topic. 3) A student in the natural or physical sciences can consider impact of black political economy on black participation/contribution or lack or in that area.. 75% of grade
