A comparison of the experiences of women in England and the United States from the nineteenth century to the present. The two shared a common language, a literature, a commitment to representative institutions, and a belief in the rule of law. They shared as well the experience of coping with domnestic ideology, and the struggle to open opportunities for women in work, politics, education, and the professions. They shared common experiences in the suffrage movement and in the two world wars. Among the topics to be covered: women's work, health issues, the suffrage movement, female pioneers in professions ansd frontiers, women and the military, and the women's liberation movement.
Three essay exams (two hour exams plus final: 30/30/40%)
