Course Description

This graduate reading seminar introduces students to some of the major secondary studies that have shaped and are shaping the field of medieval history. Readings proceed in roughly chronological order from Late Antiquity through the Renaissance. By discussing and writing about these sources, beginning students will practice evaluating evidence and argument, while advanced students will build their bibliographies for major field exams. At the end of the course, students should be able to articulate and defend their own chronological and topical conception of the Middle Ages.
