Course Description
This course will introduce students to the history of the United States from the beginning of European colonization of the Americas through the Civil War. We will consider four key themes: first, the development of the English colonies in North America; second, the significance and meaning of slavery in American life; third, the ways in which industrialization and the emergence of a national market transformed economic and social life; and fourth, how the problems Americans confronted in the mid-nineteenth century led to movements for social change and to crises that only war could resolve.
Grading Policy
