This is an introductory course intended to acquaint students with the wide variety of different kinds of potential primary sources for use in original research. Kinds of sources covered by lecture, readings, discussion, and "hands-on" exercises include personal papers (manuscripts), photographs, maps, ephemera, architectural ecords, business and legal records, newspapers, oral history, city directories, census records and other types of government and public records. The course also introduces the students to different methodological approaches associated with social history. The course features short analytical exercises and one final term paper.
