Course Description

This course examines the United States from the end of the Civil War to the present, a period of rapid and transformative change. How did this change influence political and economic developments, patterns of work and leisure, the formation of urban, suburban, and rural subcultures, race relations, and ideas of gender and sexuality? We will attempt to answer this question by exploring important political moments such as Reconstruction, the rise and fall of the New Deal Order, and the rise of the United States as a global superpower and by focusing on the voices and experiences of both the key figures and the average persons who lived during, and thus shaped, these moments. HIS 315L and 316L may not both be counted. Partially fulfills legislative requirement for American history.
