HIS 364G • Gend/Militarizatn Arab World-W
11:00 AM-12:00 PM
Virginia Woolf noted, with the privilege of belonging in the global North, that 'as a woman I have no country.' For women and men in the modern Arab world, nation-state identity and national sovereignty--or their absence--influence ways in which gendered and sexualized identities are lived. This course will move beyond embodied citizenship, to consider the contours by which military institutions (and the resources that fund them) imprint womanliness and masculinity, childhood and age, on residents of the Arab world.
