Course Description
Survey of Japanese history from the late Tokugawa period to the end of World War II: the crisis of the samurai state; the Western challenge and the Meiji revolution; modern nationalism and imperialism; industrialization and social change; the democracy movement; the changing position of women; fascism, militarism, and total war. We will focus especially on the subjective experiences of Japanese women and men who lived through and created Japan's distinctive path to modernity.
