Course Description
In the early-modern Atlantic ideas circulated along commodities and slaves. Merchants, government officials, missionaries, travelers, and various others mobile populations crisscrossed the Atlantic carrying with them knowledge and ideas in each direction. In this course well discuss Puritan, Quaker, and Catholic (Iberian and French) texts, images, and objects that represented colonization as the creation of spiritual plantations.
Grading Policy
This is a writing-intensive lecture course in which students will turn in weekly reading reports of 2 pages in length and will take two take-home exams (mid term and final, 5-10 pages each). 100% of the grade will be derived from these writing assignments.
