Talk: "Some New Directions in African History"

Dr. Jerven will discuss new contributions from economic history to interpreting long-term change in Africa.

Dr. Morten Jerven (Ph.D. Economic History, London School of Economics, 2008) is an Assistant Professor in the School for International Studies at Simon Fraser University. Currently Dr. Jerven is working on linking the work on post-colonial economic development with the economic history of colonial Africa. He is also doing work on the comparative economic history of developing countries reconsidering the larger narratives of the historical roots of poverty. His main research projects are focusing on the African growth data where the two related aims are to assess its quality and to construct a reliable basis to evaluate and interpret long term economic change in African economies.

Dr. Jerven's talk, Some New Directions in African History, and discussion will take place from 10 am - 12 noon. An informal meeting with graduate students will be from 2 - 4 pm. Both events will be in Garrison 1.102. 
The talk and discussion are free and open to the public; no RSVP is necessary. Graduate students from all majors are welcome to attend the meeting with Dr. Jerven.
